Bushfire-rated Windows and Doors

Building in a bushfire-prone area does not mean you have to compromise on natural light, energy efficiency or architectural style.

Taberners manufactures tested BAL-40 aluminium window and door systems using selected products from the Vantage®, Elevate™ and ThermalHEART™ ranges.

Available configurations include window and door styles for residential and commercial projects across Orange, the Central West, Blue Mountains and Western NSW.

Every BAL-40 project must be manufactured and specified according to the relevant tested system, including its frame, glass, seals, screens and hardware.

What Does BAL-40 Mean?

A Bushfire Attack Level, or BAL, measures a building’s potential exposure to ember attack, radiant heat and direct flame contact during a bushfire.

BAL-40 applies where the assessed radiant heat exposure is greater than 29kW/m² and up to 40kW/m². At this level, a building may be exposed to significant ember attack, burning debris, high radiant heat and possible flame contact.

BAL-40 is the second-highest Bushfire Attack Level, below BAL-FZ or Flame Zone.

Bushfire Attack Level General
exposure
BAL-LOW Insufficient risk to require specific bushfire construction
BAL-12.5 Ember attack and radiant heat up to 12.5kW/m²
BAL-19 Increasing ember attack and radiant heat up to 19kW/m²
BAL-29 Increased ember attack and radiant heat up to 29kW/m²
BAL-40 Significant ember attack, heat up to 40kW/m² and possible flame contact
BAL-FZ Direct flame exposure, embers and radiant heat above 40kW/m²

Your property’s BAL must be determined through an appropriate bushfire assessment. Taberners does not assign the BAL rating to a property.

FAQs

A property’s BAL is determined through the applicable bushfire assessment and planning process. Depending on the project, this may involve a bushfire consultant, council, certifier or other qualified professional.

No. BAL-40 windows are designed and tested to satisfy specific bushfire construction requirements when supplied in an approved configuration. They do not make a building fireproof or guarantee its survival.

BAL-40 covers exposure up to 40kW/m² with possible flame contact. BAL-FZ applies to more severe exposure above 40kW/m² with a significantly higher likelihood of direct flame contact.

Selected BAL-40 window and door systems accept approved double-glazed configurations. The exact glass composition, size and framing must comply with the relevant product documentation.

Adding new glass or screens to an existing window does not automatically make it BAL-40 compliant. Complete replacement with an appropriate system may be necessary, subject to professional assessment.

No. Taberners manufactures windows and doors to the documented requirements of a project. The property’s BAL should be determined by the relevant qualified professional or approval authority.
